토스트마스터즈를 소개합니다: 광주지부의 탄생
“Everywhere and anywhere, in whatever field you work, there are two fundamental skills that are required for you to be successful: communication and leadership,” says Dong-Wan Lim. Currently a 2019-2020 Toastmasters area director and a member of the District 93 Executive Committee, Lim joined his first Toastmasters club in Canada 15 years ago. He first wanted to improve his English communication skills, but he soon found himself benefitting in other areas and with new opportunities. This article aims to introduce Toastmasters and its new Gwangju chapter to readers with the help of Lim, who was kind enough to provide his input on the organization.
What is Toastmasters International?
Toastmasters International is a nonprofit organization that teaches interpersonal skills such as communication, management, and leadership. In order to aid people to become better public speakers, Toastmasters provides its members with educational programs and holds highly experimental and dynamic meetings to develop interpersonal skills. The organization now exceeds 358,000 members and has 16,700 chapters across 143 countries. When asked about how Toastmasters has affected him, Lim said “I thought it was an amazing club. Before, my English was really dry, but then I started becoming more comfortable speaking and saw a big difference in myself in many aspects.”
As there are many different Toastmasters chapters conducting meetings in multiple languages in Korea, Lim also emphasized that Toastmasters is not “just about language learning or English.” Native Korean speakers are also expected to attend meetings in Korea in order to improve their own communication or leadership skills.
Story of Personal Growth
After one year with Toastmasters in Canada, Lim returned to South Korea where he continued his membership. He joined a chapter called South River Toastmasters (SRTM), one of the oldest and most popular charter clubs in South Korea. Then he put his improved public skills to the test by participating in a nationwide English speech contest. He was fortunate to win two first-place prizes, one awarded by the Korea Herald then one by the Joongang Ilbo. Of these successes, Lim said, “I consider my personal growth as one of the very many success stories out there, so the program definitely works.”
In 2004, Lim started his first Toastmasters club called Sinchon Toastmasters (SCTM), located in Seoul. After serving as president for two terms, work and family life took over, and he stopped attending meetings. SCTM continues to hold club meetings today. “Even though I couldn’t always attend meetings due to work or family life, I never stopped being a member and worked on my educational manuals,” Lim recalls.
Lifelong Learning
Toastmasters members can expect to receive many educational materials such as speech manuals and monthly magazines. Members pay a minimal fee but Lim believes the benefits are endless. About six years into his membership, he finished his communications track by completing 40 different manuals and projects. He then continued his education by starting the leadership track, which encourages members to take officer roles in clubs or area districts. “Somehow, I got a new opportunity to serve as area director, and now I find myself with an opportunity to start a new Toastmasters club in Gwangju,” says Lim.
Once Lim finishes his leadership track, he will receive the final certificate of Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM). Focused on self-improvement, he emphasized the endless number of educational programs and manuals offered: “There are some Korean Toastmasters members who have completed multiple DTMs. So they continue to learn more and more. It’s a lifelong journey.”
The Beginning of Gwangju Toastmasters
Today, Lim hopes to benefit others with the program. “This is definitely the most efficient educational program that I would recommend for those interested in developing their communication and leadership skills,” he says. Starting in November 2019, Gwangju Toastmasters will hold its meetings every Friday in English at the Gwangju International Center.

현재 2019-2020 토스트마스터즈의 지역 이사이자 93지역 운영위원회의 멤버인 임동완 씨는 15년 전 처음으로 캐나다의 토스트마스터즈 클럽에 가입했다. 처음에 그는 영어 소통 능력을 향상시키기 위해 가입을 했지만, 다양한 분야에서 새로운 기회에도 접하게 되었다.

토스트마스터즈 인터내셔널은 무엇인가?
토스트마스터즈 인터내셔널은 대화, 관리, 그리고 리더십 등 대인 관계 기술에 대해 가르쳐주는 비영리 단체이다.
사람들이 더 좋은 대중 연설자가 되도록 돕기 위해서 토스트마스터즈는 대인 관계 기술을 향상시키기 위해 멤버들에게 교육적인 프로그램을 제공하고 매우 실험적이고 역동적인 모임을 가진다.
이 단체는 현재 143개국에 걸쳐 35만8000명이 넘는 회원과 1만6700개의 지부를 보유하고 있다.
토스트마스터즈가 자신에게 어떤 영향을 끼쳤냐는 질문에 임동완 씨는 “정말 놀라운 클럽이라고 생각했습니다. 토스트 마스터즈의 회원이 되기 전에는 저의 영어는 정말 딱딱했었습니다. 하지만 말하는 것이 점점 편해지기 시작했고 많은 방면에서 제가 달라진 것을 느꼈습니다”라고 말했다.
한국에서 많은 토스트마스터즈 지부들이 다양한 언어로 모임을 가지기 때문에 임동완 씨는 토스트마스터즈가 “그저 언어, 혹은 영어를 배우는 것에 그치지 않는다”라고 강조했다.
한국어 원어민들도 소통 능력과 리더십 능력을 기르기 위해 한국에서 개최되는 모임에 참석해야한다.
개인 성장의 이야기
캐나다에서 1년 간 토스트마스터즈 활동을 한 후, 임동완 씨는 대한민국으로 돌아와 멤버십을 이어 나갔다.
그는 한국에서 가장 오래되고 인기가 많은 지부 중 하나인 South River 토스트마스터즈 지부에 가입했다.
그리고 전국적으로 개최된 영어 연설 대회에 참가해 그의 향상된 대중 연설 실력을 시험해 보았다.
그는 운 좋게도 코리아헤럴드와 중앙일보로부터 두개의 1등 상을 받았다.
이러한 성공에 대해 임동완 씨는 “저는 저의 개인적인 성장을 수많은 성장 스토리 중 하나일 뿐이라고 생각해요, 그래서 토스트마스터즈 프로그램이 효과가 있다는 것이죠”라고 말했다.
2004년에 임동완 씨는 서울에 위치한 Sinchon Toastmasters (SCTM)라는 토스트마스터즈 클럽을 처음으로 만들었다.
두 임기 동안 회장을 하다 직장과 가족 때문에 모임에 참석하지 못하게 되었다.
SCTM은 아직도 모임을 가진다.
임동완 씨는 “비록 직장과 가족 때문에 매번 모임에 참여할 수는 없었지만 저는 항상 SCTM의 회원이였고 제 교육 매뉴얼 작업을 하였습니다”라고 말했다.
평생 교육
토스트마스터즈 회원들은 연설 매뉴얼과 월간 잡지와 같은 많은 교육 자료를 제공받을 수 있다.
회원들은 작은 회비를 내지만 임동완 씨는 작은 회비에 비해 이익은 끝이 없다고 생각한다.
회원이 된지 6년 정도가 되었을 때, 그는 40개의 매뉴얼과 프로젝트를 끝내며 소통 트랙을 마무리 지었다.
그 후 그는 리더십 트랙을 시작하며 교육을 이어 나갔다. 리더십 트랙은 회원들이 클럽이나 지역 지구 관리자가 되도록 한다.
임동완 씨는 “어쨌든 지역 지구 이사를 하게 될 새로운 기회를 얻었고 지금은 광주에서 새로운 토스트마스터즈 클럽을 열 기회까지 얻게 되었네요”라고 했다.
임동완 씨가 리더십 트랙을 끝내면 ‘저명한 토스트마스터 (Distinguished Toastmaster, DTM)’ 증명서를 수여받을 것이다.
자기 향상에 대하여, 그는 끝이 없이 제공되는 교육 프로그램과 매뉴얼을 강조했다. “한국 회원분들 중에는 여러 개의 DTM 증명서를 보유하고 있는 분들도 계세요. 그들은 끊임 없이 배우고 또 배우죠. 평생 동안 하는 여정이에요.”
광주 토스트마스터즈의 시작
오늘, 임동완 씨는 프로그램을 통해서 남들을 돕기를 바란다.
“이 프로그램이 소통과 리더십 능력을 발전시키고자 하는 이들에게 가장 효과적인 교육 프로그램입니다”라고 그가 말했다.
2019년 11월부터 광주 토스트마스터즈들은 매주 금요일 광주국제교류센터에서 영어로 모임을 가질 예정이다.
